Edna M. Moore, President has been involved with R.O.A.R! since 2002. In 2009 she was “elected” President or in better words, stepped into presidency to save R.O.A.R! from extinction. In addition to serving on the R.O.A.R! Board, she has also served on the Boards of Directors for Easter Seals and The Horn Farm. As a three time cancer survivor Edna has first hand knowledge of the need to advocate for yourself so that you are able to work in partnership with your health care providers when making those all important decisions.
She has been a practicing attorney in York for over 20 years. She is a 1988 graduate from University of Baltimore School of Law and a 1973 graduate of Dallastown High School. Edna and her husband, Dale, will be celebrating their 33rd wedding anniversary on October 22, 2010. They have a pack of 4-legged animals at their homestead in Glen Rock. Edna says that one of the best things about Dale is that he accepts every 4-legged child she brings home! She is excited to be R.O.A.R!’s President and looks forward to taking the organization to a new level along with the help of the other officers, board, and committed volunteers.
Marianne Mills, VP & Treasurer, is a 12 year ovarian cancer survivor. Having lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 1973 and seeing that her mother’s experience of misdiagnosis was still being repeated in 2001, Marianne and her oncology nurse, Glenna Vose, decided it was time to bring awareness of this disease to York and together they founded R.O.A.R!
Through her work with R.O.A.R!, Marianne has had the opportunity to visit with our Federal representatives in Washington, D.C. to urge for increased funding for research and awareness initiatives. She has also served as a consumer reviewer representing ovarian cancer patients on scientific review panels for the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program.
Marianne is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and is employed by Carroll Hospital Center as the coordinator for the laboratory outreach program. She and her husband, Jim, share their homestead with a cat and a chicken.
Kelly Helsel, Secretary had never heard of ovarian cancer until September 2009. After five years of working as a contracts paralegal in the legal department of a Baltimore County healthcare organization, and the birth of her first child, she started working in a small law firm in York in September 2009. That “law firm” happened to be that of our President, Edna Moore. What Kelly didn’t realize when she accepted this job was that she would also be helping with R.O.A.R!’s administrative duties. She was shocked to learn that so little information or education about this disease is available in the community. Because of her passion to volunteer and give back to her community, Kelly felt the need to help spread the word. Consequently, at the November 2009 Board Meeting, not being able to say “no” to Edna, she was elected Secretary. In addition, she volunteers with other groups such as the York County Paralegal Association, Central Penn Paralegal Advisory Board, March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity.
Kelly is a 2001 graduate of Northeastern High School and 2003 graduate of Central Pennsylvania College’s paralegal program. She and her husband Mike have one child and reside in York with their dog, Buddy.
Norma Beyer is an ovarian cancer fighter. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007, initiating major changes in the life of her family. She has had one confirmed recurrence of the ovarian cancer and received treatment for that during 2009. She is currently “cancer-free”: and is receiving continuing consolidation chemotherapy. Thus, she is very interested in assisting others in learning about ovarian cancer and encouraging support of research.
Norma has been teaching at York College since 1993 and is currently an assistant professor in the nursing department. She began her career in 1974 when she was commissioned in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, from Walter Reed Army Institute with a BSN (degree from University of Maryland School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD). Dr. Amanda Bittner is proud to be a part of R.O.A.R! Her involvement with R.O.A.R! began aside her beloved mother, Dee Bittner, a founding member of the organization, and she continues to do all she can in Dee’s name to help others who have been affected by ovarian cancer. An interest in health and community comes naturally to Amanda: after graduating from York College of Pennsylvania in 1991, she went on to study medicine at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey and graduated from Chicago’s prestigious Northwestern University in 2001 after completing her internal medicine residency and her fellowship in allergy/immunology. She serves the South Central Pennsylvania community as a physician and partner at the Allergy and Asthma Center and lives in York with her husband, Chris, and their infant daughter, Sasha.
